IBM Research: Nanotechnology Center

IBM Research runs in Ruschlikon, Switzerland one of the leading industry research laboratories in the world.

Together with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH) IBM Research runs this joint research facility in which research on the nano scale is conducted.

Core of this facility are the Noisefree-Labs in the basement, which require complexe measures against any outside interferences (vibration, electromagnetic shilding, temperature, humidity and noise) to such a degree, so that these rooms are unique in the world.Labs like this were never before built and the planning process in itself was a collaborative research process between the researchers and the construction engineers.

The groundfloor is mainly occupied with the cleanroom hall, in which the labs are installed house-in-house. Furthermore all the necessary chemical and gas storage rooms are situated here. On the upper floors are all the dry- and wetlabs.

As project managers we represented IBM Research with the authorities, architects, engineers and total services contractor and were in charge of the overall design and planning process.

The construction works started beginning of March 2009 and the building was completed and handed over three month earlier than scheduled in December 2010.
