IBM Switzerland: NEW HQ Building in Zurich

IBM Switzerland is realizing a new building complex in Zurich-Altstetten for some 2,100 employees. The groundbreaking ceremony was held in May 2002 with Zurich's mayor Dr. Elmar Ledergerber in attendance.

The architect of the striking new building, offering total office space of 40,000 m2, is Max Dudler. Allreal constructed the building as investor and total service contractor.

In March 2002, IBM commissioned us to act as client representative up through the completion of this exceptional building in late 2004, after having already been charged with project development beginning in 1999. Prior to the start of construction, this far-reaching assignment most prominently included:

  • Spatial and locational strategy as well as the project specifications
  • Feasibility studies and contractual solution concepts
  • Procurement of the site
  • Project studies competition
  • Design plan as per planning and building laws and projection up to the building permit
  • Investor, use and total service contracts

The new Vulkanstrasse office building in Zurich is the largest construction project in the history of IBM Switzerland and consists of two building segments with a height of up to 44 m. The structure complies with the Minergie standard for energy efficient buildings.

The workstations are being realized according to the e-place concept using the latest IT and working technology.

The City of Zurich worked together with IBM and other real estate holders north of the Altstetten railway station to put together a development concept for the enhancement of the district. This plan also envisions attractive green spaces and surrounding areas and the further expansion of public transportation.

Clients, planners and total service contractors are carrying out the building project using Internet-based applications of the project IT we developed.
